The spacious Shenan spreading like a sea; The pleasant Boyne; the fishy fruitfull Ban; Swift Awniduff, which of the English man Is calde Blackdwater; and the Liffar deep; Sad Trowis, that once his peoples over-ran; Strong Allo tombling from Slewlogher steep; And Mulla mine, whose waves I whilom taught to weep, F. Q. IV11-41. A few examples from Drayton's poem will suffice to show the similarity of manner, which is a striking one. Then Bradon gently brings forth Avon from her source Pol. III-188. First Blackmoor crownss her bank, as Peusham with her pride, Pol. lII-191. Then came the lusty Froom, the first of floods that met Fair Avon entring into fruitful Somerset, With her attending brooks; and her to Bath doth bring Pol. III-222-24 To noble Avon, next, clear Chute as kindly came, To Bristol her to bear, the fairest seat of Fame; Pol. III-226-27. In giving the description of the rivers and their location Spenser sometimes alliterates the names of places and regions, as: And Twede, the limit betwixt Logris land And Albany: and Eden, though but small, F. Q. IV-11-36 The spreading Lee that, like an Island fayre, Encloseth Corke with his divided flood; F. Q. IV-11-44. This use is very frequent in Drayton's Polyolbion, as: Where she of ancient time had parted, as a mound, The Monumethian fields and Glamorganian groun...
